George Winterbottom was born on Coronation day 1911, (hence name George). He was born in Delph and worked as a packer and driver. Now he is retired and is the Delph Lollipop man. His father was a fitter and turner in Delph at a mill run by Asprey and Pickfords. George married Violet Ann Haigh who also came from Delph - their mothers used to work together. Violet was a woolen weaver. She died 1976.
