Custodial history:
Joseph Adshead was a prominent supporter of education reform, as well as being an expert on the failures of the British prison system and ways in which to improve it, especially focusing on the system put in place for juvenile correction. To bring public attention to the latter cause, he wrote a well-received book, Prisons and Prisoners, and he studied alternative justice and correction systems, particularly the French and American penal systems. He was a founding member of the international organization 'Congrès pénitentiaire'. He was a City Councillor for the Oxford Ward from 1846-1861. He was also a Baptist Church historian.
He married Ann Davenport in 1832, the seond daughter of John Davenport of Withington and had three sons: John (1834-1844), Joseph (1835-1896) and Benjamin. After the early death of Ann in 1837 he married her elder sister , Penelope. His son, Benjamin Adshead, focused on expanding his estate, buying a number of properties across Manchester, usually via auction, and selling land.
