Custodial history:
Following the recommendations of Professor Sir Alexander Ewing The Department of Education and Science agreed to establish a school for 'Language Disordered children' and the Manchester Education Committee undertook responsibility for maintenance, equipment and staffing.
In 1968 a small part of the envisaged building of Ewing School was opened for 12 children (all under 7 years of age) and six staff. Most of the children were weekly boarders. The first Headmaster was Mr. I.R. Petrie. The children came from all over the North of England.
The school was officially opened in 1970 as a school providing 'for the very special needs of children with severe speech impairment and / or language disorder'. The school and Mary Kay pioneered the use of the Paget-Gorman Sign System in the school.
Mary Haytock was born in Didsbury on 23 March 1917 and died on 13 June 2006 in Chester. She worked in Manchester all her life and began her career as a librarian, including working in Central Library. She became a teacher at Ewing School and when it opened and became Deputy of the school. She married Mateusz Koczur, a Polish airman, in 1941. She was known as 'Mrs K'
by the children in the school and following his death she later changed her name to Mary Kay in 1965.
Donated by Mrs Mary Kay of Chester and by her daughters, Ursula Robinson and Helena Wyktorja Moorhead in 2006 and 2007 (2006/23, 2006/40, 2006/55, 2007/52)
