Custodial history:
Herbert Warren (formerly Weinmann), 24, and Dr. Hugo Steinberg, 48, refugees from Vienna, both joined the Royal Pioneer Corps on 6 February 1940 along with eighteen other refugees then living at Kershaw House, a Jewish refugee hostel on Alexandra Road South. Wilma Weiss, of Vienna, who came to Manchester as a result of Quaker support, obtained entry for her former neighbour in Vienna, Lily Weinmann, as housekeeper to a Mrs. Seares in Hazel Grove. Hermann (Herbert) was her son who, before leaving Europe, had spent some time in Dachau after Krystallnacht. Herbert worked for Urmston Council as a rubbish collector before joining the Pioneer Corps. After leaving the army, Herbert worked for a number of firms as a German translator/correspondent. These included a chocolate factory in Radcliffe and a company in Trafford Park. After retiring from commerce, he taught at the Abraham Moss Centre in Crumpsall. He married Yolanda (maiden name unknown), also a refugee from Vienna, whose mother was Catholic and whose father was Jewish.
