John E. Sutton started working at Bradford Colliery, Manchester, when he was 14 years old. He worked there as a check weigher for 31 years. He was secretary of the Bradford branch of the Miners' Federation for fourteen years. He resigned as a councillor in October 1910 after sixteen years. He stood as the Labour candidate in the general election for the East Manchester constituency.
