Custodial history:
The first Primitive Methodist society in Altrincham met in a loft over a stable in New Town in 1835 and at that time was part of the Warrington Primitive Methodist Circuit. The society, however, lapsed, and when Altrincham was missioned from Manchester in 1855, this marked a new beginning. The society was transferred to the Lymm Primitive Methodist Circuit in 1871 and its small band of its members decided to build themselves a church. The resulting chapel and Sunday school building was opened in Oxford Road in 1875. Sunday school work was particularly strong owing to the leadership of Frederick Kean and the new school premises, opened in 1922, were named the Kean Memorial Schools in tribute. The church was transferred to Altrincham Methodist Circuit in 1932 and was closed in 1960.
