Custodial history:
The first Primitive Methodist meetings in Eccles started in 1828 and were held in a house in Buxton Street off Barton Lane. The society moved to larger premises in Barton the same year and became part of Manchester 3rd Primitive Methodist (Salford) Circuit. A new chapel was built in Peel Street in Eccles in 1865 and the society stayed there until 1877 when it moved to the former Wesleyan chapel in Regent Street. The Immanuel society moved again in 1924, this time to the former Baptist chapel in Wellington Road. In 1904 Eccles had split from the Salford Circuit and formed Manchester 10th Primitive Methodist (Eccles) Circuit with Immanuel being the head church. After the Methodist Union of 1932 the circuit was re-named Eccles (Immanuel) Methodist Circuit. In 1955 Immanuel joined the new amalgamated Eccles Methodist Circuit. The late 1960's was a time of great upheaval for Immanuel owing to the construction of the M602 Eccles By-pass Motorway and the contingent clearing of the area and re-housing of families. Immanuel itself was demolished, the final service taking place on 30 November 1969. The society continued however in a new building in Old Wellington Road, opened in 1971 and known as Eccles (Immanuel) Methodist Church. Immanuel joined the Cadishead and Eccles Methodist Circuit in 1973 and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 1978. It eventually closed however in 2002.
