Custodial history:
A Methodist society was established in Mossley in the 1770's and in 1788 the first chapel was opened in Craddock Street. Initially part of Manchester Wesleyan Circuit, the Mossley society transferred to the new Oldham Wesleyan Circuit in 1791. At the foundation of the Methodist New Connexion in 1797, Mossley joined the new cause and in 1804 transferred to the Ashton-under-Lyne MNC Circuit. As the Mossley society flourished, it became necessary to replace the Craddock Street chapel with a larger building, opened in Market Place in 1835. The Sunday school too, opened in Wyre Street in 1805, needed to be extended, a second storey being added in 1836. In 1837 the Mossley MNC Circuit was formed, headed by the Market Place chapel. The second half of the nineteenth century saw a halt to any further expansions and Wyre Street school eventually closed in 1908. Market place chapel however continued. In 1951 it joined Oldham (East) Methodist Circuit and in 1962 it transferred to Ashton-under-Lyne Circuit. In 1965 a new school was built adjacent to the chapel and in time it was adapted for use as a school-chapel, the old 1835 chapel being scheduled for demolition.
