A Sunday school in Irlam was in existence by the late 1820's. A chapel was opened in 1853 and a new school building was opened in 1860. A new chapel was opened in 1912. Initially part of Leigh Wesleyan Circuit, the chapel transferred to Cadishead Wesleyan Circuit in 1872, where it remained until 1973 when it joined the new amalgamated Cadishead and Eccles Methodist Circuit.
