The origins of this circuit lie in Salford Wesleyan Methodist Circuit, which was re-named Manchester 2nd Wesleyan Methodist (Irwell Street) Circuit in the 1850s. In 1860 Gravel Lane Chapel left to head its own circuit, Manchester 6th Wesleyan Methodist Circuit. When Irwell Street Chapel moved to the Manchester and Salford Mission in 1892, the Irwell Street Circuit was re-named Salford (Pendleton) Wesleyan Methodist Circuit. In 1954 the circuit was joined by Salford (Swinton and Pendlebury) ex-Primitive Methodist Circuit and re-named Salford (Swinton, Pendlebury and Pendleton) Methodist Circuit. The Salford ex-United Methodist Circuit joined in 1956.With the transfer of the Pendleton churches to the Manchester and Salford Mission in 1964, the circuit's name was again changed, this time to Swinton Methodist Circuit.
