The church was opened in 1826, built on the proceeds of the sale of Swan Street Chapel, and belonged to Manchester 1st Wesleyan (Oldham Street) Circuit. The Sunday school was in Elm Street. A proper, legalized trust for Wesley Chapel does not seem to have been formed until 1850. In 1883 a new Wesley chapel building was opened, erected on the same site. Also in 1883, after the removal of Oldham Street Chapel to the Manchester and Salford Wesleyan Methodist Mission, Wesley became the head church in the circuit which was consequently re-named Manchester (Oldham Road) Wesleyan Methodist Circuit. Wesley eventually closed in 1946.
