1878-1966
Archives
The circuit originated as Manchester (Victoria) Wesleyan Methodist Circuit, which was formed in 1878 out of Manchester (Oldham Street) Wesleyan Methodist Circuit. The circuit consisted of the Cheetham churches (Victoria in Queen's Road, Ebenezer at Red Bank and Irkdale Mission Hall in Smedley Road) and also the Wesleyan chapels at Collyhurst (Egginton Street), Harpurhey (Beech Mount) and Moston (Ashley Lane). In 1936 Victoria Circuit was joined by Manchester (North East) United Methodist Circuit and re-named Manchester (Harpurhey) Methodist Circuit. The circuit now included ex-United Methodist churches from Blackley (Market Street), Moston (Chain Bar, Gill Street and Streetfold) and Middleton (Hebers and Sadler Street). Two churches from Manchester (Leicester Road) United Methodist Circuit also joined; namely Topley Street in Collyhurst and Queen's Road in Miles Platting. Former Primitive Methodist churches from the Manchester (Newton Heath) ex-PM Circuit joined in 1956; namely Barnes Green, Blackley and Lightbowne Road, Moston. In 1966 the Harpurhey Circuit joined with Manchester (Newton Heath) Methodist Circuit (distinct from the old Newton Heath Primitive Methodist Circuit) to form Manchester (North East) Methodist Circuit (distinct from the old North East United Methodist Circuit).
