The School initially was based in Pottery Lane and was opened on the 29 September 1875 as an evening school. In January 1881 the day school commenced catering for both infants and elementary pupils. The log books lists two names for the school 'The Mechanical Institution, Openshaw, Girls' and 'Pottery Lane Board School, Openshaw, Mixed'. It maybe that the evening classes were known as the Mechanical Institution and when the school started day classes its name bacame the Pottery Lane Board School. On the 18 July 1894 a new school building was opened on Ashton Old Road with accommodation for 1,019 pupils. The school beacme known as the Ashton Old Road Board School.
