The circuit originated as Manchester (Grosvenor Street) United Methodist Free Church Circuit. In 1869 it was re-named Manchester 2nd UMFC (Oxford Street) Circuit and after the Methodist Union of 1907 it became known as Manchester (Oxford Road) United Methodist Circuit. In 1917 two churches joined from the former Methodist New Connexion circuit, the Manchester (South) Circuit: namely George Street ex-MNC in Altrincham and Boston Street ex-MNC in Hulme. The Oxford Road Circuit continued after the Methodist Union of 1932 (and is not to be confused with the Oxford Road ex-Wesleyan Methodist Circuit), but gradually its churches were moved to other circuits until it was left with Oxford Road Chapel and the Beswick Street Chapel in Ancoats. When the circuit was dissolved in 1949, these two churches joined Manchester (Withington) Methodist Circuit, but closed soon after.
