From 1873 until the opening of the new Central Library in St Peter's Square, the minutes of the chief library sub-committee were kept along with those of the various branch library sub-committees. In this time the site of the chief library changed several times: Campfield 1858-1877, King Street 1877-1912, and Piccadilly 1912-1934. See M740/8/1-3.
The main series of sub-committees are: Reference Library & General Purposes; Reference Library Extension; Branches; Books Selection; Lectures; Audit; Library Administration; and various special subcommittees. Where a branch (or a department of the chief library) has opened for the first time, this is noted at item level. The reference M740/1/5/8 is empty.
