Detail of hat machine at S.D. Ainsworth and Sons. The small pieces of wool fibre were put in the machine at the far right, by the time they reached the other end they had been thinned, flattened and compressed into a length of felt. These were then passed between the cone (left side) and the two projections and were moulded into the shape of a hat. This, and the following two photos were taken for the purpose of evidence in court. A woman worker had damaged her arm severely in the machine and was sueing for Compensation - Reginald Ainsworth offered to settle out of court - set her up in a shop, but she took them to court and lost.
