He had attended Eccles Secondary School, on leaving school he became a cub journalist on the Eccles and Patricroft Journal. He joined the R.A.F. during the Second World War, eventually gaining pilot's wings. When he was demobbed he decided to continue his education and took a degree at London University. He then made a decision to change his choice of career and became a schoolmaster.
