John Nelson, maternal grandfather of the donor, Winifred Mary Wilson nee Radcliffe. I am informed by the donor that John Nelson was left fatherless at an early age. Because of the financial strain on the family John was sent at an early age to Grisedale Hall in the Lake District as a stable boy. John worked his way up from stable boy to coachman. Written on the reverse of the photograph by the donor is: Grandad Nelson father of Mary, my mother. Winifred Mary Wilson Probably in the stable yard at Hill Top, Netherton, in the time of Mr Dyson, Solicitor. Date of photograph believed to be between 1900 and 1910.
