He played in this dance band in Crewe as a sideline to his job as a blacksmith, to earn a bit more money. He somehow learned to play the violin and played at the Palace Cinema, Sandbach for the silent films, in the Sandbach and District Chamber Orchestra as well as the Holmes Chapel Symphony Orchestra. c. 1920's.
