George Vernon was the driver and collector of dues (6d per week per family) for the doctor who lived at Buckley House before Field Officer's paternal grandfather, Dr T. D. Watt, and was also Dr Watt's driver for a time. Mr Vernon's wife, Mrs M. A. Vernon was the housekeeper. She also worked as a midwife, nurse, etc., in the neighbourhood. She was Mrs Watt's midwife, and delivered her children Christian and George, Field Officer's uncle and aunt, who were born when the family lived at Hodge Road, Walkden.
