Paul Cons was Promotions and Entertainments Manager at Manchester's famous Hacienda club on Whitworth Street West, the hub of much of Manchester's popular cultural experience during the late 1980s and early 1990s. As the architect of 'Flesh', among other similar events, Paul Cons was responsible for the gay club nights that was part of the background to the origins of queerupnorth. A banner for 'Flesh', declaring 'It's Queer Up North' supplied the name of the festival. 'Flesh' featured in the festival until 1998 and was largely responsible for the clubbing element of the festival which endures to the present day [2007]. In the interview Paul Cons talks about the gay scene in Manchester, London and New York and relates the evolution of gay club culture. There is also a substantial amount of information about the Hacienda and detailed descriptions of some of the events and entertainments.
