General notes:
In response to an increasing climate of racial intolerance and division in Britain, Rock Against Racism (RAR) and the Anti Nazi League (ANL) were established between 1976-1977. Although developing from two different backgrounds and with different operational methods both organisations aimed to combat the rise of far right groups in the UK.The inspiration for the Northern Carnival came from Bernie Wilcox of RAR and Geoff Brown of the ANL. It was while travelling back together from the Carnival Against the Nazis, held in London’s Victoria Park on 30 Apr 1978, that they formulated the idea to hold a similar concert in the Northwest. The event was organised within ten weeks and used a network of contacts to produce the final event and associated RAR events on the run up to the concert. The Northern Carnival Against the Nazis was both a rally and concert. Preceding the concert a rally gathered at Strangeways on Bury New Road and marched through Manchester to the concert in Alexandra Park. The line-up for the concert included Steel Pulse, Buzzcocks, Exodus and China Street and it was attended by around 40,000 people. In 2018 the original organisers, Bernie and Geoff, worked with the Manchester Digital Music Archive on a Heritage Lottery Funded project to arrange a series of commemoration events. A launch was held at Manchester Central Library on Saturday 14 July 2018. At this event the items within this collection were collected.
