The Manchester and Salford Mission established a maternity charity to care and provide aid for unmarried mothers and their babies, an important part of the Mission's programme of social work. The Mission's first maternity home (and hospital combined) opened in 1903 and was situated at 42 High Street, Chorlton-on-Medlock. In 1926 the adjacent building was purchased and used as a mother and baby home. Later the work was transferred to Lorna Lodge in Didsbury. In 1986 the Manchester Methodist Housing Association took over Lorna Lodge, refurbished it and continued to run it as a home for single mothers and babies, with the Mission providing pastoral support.
