The donor's father, Sol Levy, ran Sun Film Distribution Company of Holloway Head, Birmingham; he had the film distribution rights for the Griffiths Studio ('Birth of a Nation'). Sol Levy established the Scala chain of cinemas commencing with the Birmingham Scala in 1913. Sol Levy died in 1929 aged 52.
The donor's family lived in Hagley Road, Birmingham.
The donor and her sisters were very keen on amateur theatricals and, along with friends, formed concert parties that raised funds for children's hospital and other charities. Sol Levy built a small studio for them at the back of the Hagley Road house.
The donor's mother (nee Hollander) was born in Abertillery, Wales, in 1880. The donor's grandmother, Annie Hollander (nee Bernsten) was born in Russia c.1847.
The donor's mother, Lily, had a sister, Minnie, who was born in 1863. Minnie married Sol Baron and they lived in Peterborough c.1891.
The donor's mother's sister Gertrude, married Sim Lubelski who was in the mens clothing business in Leeds.
The donor's maternal aunt Florrie married Michael Lever in Derby in 1904 and they went to live in Bournemouth.
The donor's uncle Joel Hollander, ran furniture company of Woolf and Hollander in London.
The donor's great-grandfather, Moses Hirsch Hollander, came to U.K. in 1854, having been born at Dobreen near Plotsk in 1810. He spent a short time in Liverpool and then became Chazan of Coventry Synagogue and the he was elected Second Reader at Birmingham Singer's Hill Synagogue, a position he held till 1884. He died in 1899.
