Photographs Related To The Holbrook Family

Nelson, Mr, fl 1996, of Altrincham, Cheshire1927-1996
Archives
The collection is the work of a family amateur photographer. As Miss Holbrook features as a child it seems reasonable to surmise that the photographs were taken by a relative of a previous generation such as her father or mother. The photographs feature an Edwardian family in financially comfortable circumstances. Photographs were taken of the home and garden, motor cars and members of the family at home and on holiday. The house which is photographed most frequently and in some detail does not appear to have been situated in the Worthing area (see correspon.d.ence D169/9).
There is some evidence of a rudimentary attempt to organize the collection un.d.er broad subject headings such as `Groups', North Wales', `Odd Portraits', `Amy', `Louie' and `Millicent'. Some photographs were also taken in Blackpool.
The material generally is in poor physical con.d.ition and a proportion of the negatives were taken out of focus. However, Mr Ren.d.ell, a professional photographer of many years stan.d.ing, was able to make a small number of prints from the original negatives (see D169/8).
This is an outline listing of the collection. The bulk of the collection comprises glass negatives and these have not been in.d.ividually catalogued.

Custodial history:
The collection was directed into the D.P.A. via Mr Douglas Rendell, 26, Crescent Road, Hale, Cheshire, WA15 9NA. Little is known about provenance. The negatives were found at 7, Wyngate Road when Mr Nelson moved into the house. Limited documentation with the collection identifies the name Miss Louise Holbrook, Grey Lodge, 9A Liverpool Gardens, Worthing, Sussex. Mr Rendell's correspondence with Worthing Public Library revealed that the Holbrook family is documented as living at that address from c1927 to 1955. Miss L Holbrook first appeared in the Worthing Directory for 1946 and finally in the 1954-55 Electoral Register.
