Custodial history:
Miss Cooper was born in Blackburn but has lived in Manchester for some 40 years now. She recalls her family living in Montague Street, Blackburn and later they moved to Longton Street further away from the town centre. Blackburn was a small Jewish Community - about 100 families. The community had a small school and there was a small butcher's shop, but blackbread was obtained from Manchester. The Jewish Community had the services of a Mr. Krout (spelling uncertain), as Chazan, Mohel and Shochet. The community was scattered all round the town, many worked in tailoring but a few had fancy goods shops.
Miss Cooper's father, Abe Cooper, was born in Russia, her mother Deborah (nee Gilbert) came from Manchester but she was not born here. She was born in Jasse, Rumania. Abe Cooper went to the U.S. before coming to England, he came to Manchester but went on to Blackburn where there was work for him as a tailor. Abe Cooper's father David came to Blackburn with Abe. David's wife had died in Russia. David Cooper earned his living selling tailor's trimmings. Miss Nellie Cooper was one of 4 children. She had 3 brothers - Charles, Sol and Wilfred. Her mother died and her father remarried. He married Tilly Showman from Manchester and they had a daughter Thelma (now Mrs Eppel) who was born in Manchester.
Miss Cooper went to St. Peter's Church of England school in Blackburn. The Chazan came round to give the Jewish pupils Hebrew lessons. When the family moved from Montague Street to Longton Street Miss Nellie Cooper went to Accrington Road school where she was the only Jewish pupil. In Longton Street there was a grass verge opposite their house: cows and horses used to graze here. There was easy access to the countryside from here and Miss Cooper used to go for picnics in summer. On Pesach she'd walk to a farm with a can to collect Pesach milk. Also she used to walk with her friends to Ribchester and Wilpshire.
Miss Cooper's family, the Cobb and the Cohen families were very close friends in Blackburn. Miss Nellie Cooper used to go regularly to the cinema as did her grandfather who couldn't speak English. She remembers the Theatre Royal for its musical comedies.
At first Abe Cooper worked for someone else. Then he turned to working from private orders which he'd get on recommendation. David Cooper died through a motor accident in Blackburn before the war. The whole Cooper family left Blackburn just before World War Two and came to Manchester settling in Bignor Street, Cheetham, and later moving to Middleton Road. Abe Cooper left Blackburn because work opportunities in Blackburn were dwindling. Miss Nellie Cooper helped out her father when trade was brisk. In Manchester she worked in a clothing factory from where she retired 3 years ago
