Photographs Related To Eccles Parish Church And Medical Practice

Watson, Stanley, fl 1998, of Eccles, Manchester1914-1955
Archives
The deposit comprises two distinct sets of lantern slides. The first (D126/1) came from Eccles Parish Church where the donor is a churchwarden; the other (D126/2) was recently purchased by the donor from an auction sale in Eccles.
The major component of this latter collection consists of lantern slides on medical themes and was clearly assembled by a professional medical person for use in lectures. The majority of material in this collection is identified and remains in a reasonable state of preservation.
There is in addition an assortment of lantern slides, some in colour, on a variety of subjects including views taken mainly in Europe and North America, natural history, children's stories, moral tales, battles scenes and religious themes. Many of these are cracked or otherwise in a very poor state of repair. It has not been considered worthwhile to list these in.d.ividually.
There is no evidence to suggest that all the lantern slides puchased at the auction sale originated from the same source. The auction sale lantern slides included a sheet of headed notepaper printed with the address of Lantern Magic, 11 Pen.d.leton Avenue, Rawtenstall, Lancashire, Englan.d., BB4 8UX, Tel: 0706 227328. The manuscript note reads: For your next antiques auction. 3 boxes of miscellaneous magic lantern slides. No reserve. Please sen.d. cheque to above address, made payable to A.J. Gill. Thank you Andrew Gill 18/4/93.
Commercial lantern slide makers whose work is represented in the collection include the following: Church Army, Lantern Department, Edgware Road; Dunscombe, Optician; Flatters & Garnett Ltd., Manchester; Frien.d.s Temperance Union; W.C. Hughes, Brewster House, 82, Mortimer Road, Kingslan.d. Road, Lon.d.on, N; Newton & Co., 3, Fleet Street, Lon.d.on; E.G. Wood, 1 & 2 Queen Street, Cheapside, Lon.d.on.
