Until its purchase in 1855, Quarry Bank Estate was leased from Lord Stamford, first by Samuel and after his death, Robert Hyde Greg. The Company as under each tenant, paid a rent for the Mill to the lesses who was responsible for providing the power by maintaining the water wheel, and also for the repair and replacement of machinery. As a result of this, much of the information about these matters is found in the private or estate ledgers.
