The Higher Openshaw Wesleyan Methodist society began meeting in an old joiner's shop in Harley Street in 1872. A new school-chapel was opened in Ogden Lane in 1877 and extended in 1882 to accommodate an infant school and lecture room. The society continued to grow and in 1890 the new larger church in Stanley Street was opened. A larger school building was opened in 1909. Initially part of Manchester (Grosvenor Street) Wesleyan Methodist Circuit, the Higher Openshaw church joined Manchester (Longsight) Wesleyan Methodist Circuit in 1879, then moved to Manchester (Droylsden) Wesleyan Methodist Circuit in 1897 and continued in the amalgamated Manchester (Droylsden and Openshaw) Methodist Circuit from 1944. In 1979 the church building was demolished and the school building was altered to become the new place of worship. In 2002 Stanley Street joined the new Manchester Methodist Circuit, but the following year it was decided to close the church for worship. The final service took place on 31 August 2003. The building remains the property of the Methodist Church and is used for youth work.
