Frédéric Mitterrand's feature film version of Puccini's classic opera. Set in 19th century Japan, the story tells of Pinkerton (Richard Troxell), a US naval officer who marries a Japanese girl, Cio-Cio-San (Ying Huang), and then returns to the sea, promising to return soon. When he does return, he has his American wife with him, and when he discovers that Cio-Cio-San has borne him a child, he tries to take that child back to America with him, leaving Cio-Cio-San stranded, abused and alone.
