Custodial history:
The domestic chapel of the Byron family was purchased by the inhabitants of the township of Blackley, within the parish of Manchester, from Sir John Byron in 1611. This was rebuilt in the 1730's, but was again inadequate for the growing population by 1844 when a new church was built on an adjoining site. The foundation stone of the new church was laid on 29 April 1844 and it was consecrated and dedicated to St Peter on 29 November 1844. The township of Blackley was assigned to Blackley chapel by Order in Council, 14 September 1838 (London Gazette, 29 March 1839). The boundaries of the District were defined by Order in Council, 8 June 1854 (London Gazette, 16 June 1854) and slightly altered by Order in Council, 24 June 1856 (London Gazette, 1 July 1856). In 1866 the new District of St Andrew's was taken out of St Peter's, by Order in Council, 27 June (London Gazette, 29 June 1866). In 1900 part of the parish was lost to the new Holy Trinity, by Order in Council, 7 August (London Gazette, 14 August 1900). St Paul's, Blackley, was assigned a District partly from St Peter's by Order in Council, 6 February 1925 (London Gazette, 10 February), and received more of the parish by Order in Council, 14 March 1958 (London Gazette, 25 March).
