The earliest member of the family to appear in these records is William 1798-1807, his brother Joseph kept the Church Inn, Newton Heath, which passed on his death in 1843 to his son William. This William and his brother John, were Treasurers of the No. 8 Loyal Orange Lodge and No. 99 Lodge of Free and Ancient Gardeners, Newton Heath, 1817-1841, and kept their accounts in the family. Another brother, Joseph, was grocer, baker, corn and flour merchant at 83 and 85 Droylesden Rd. [see and at his death in 1872 the business passed to his son James, who died in 1892, to be followed by his sons Joseph and James, brothers of Miss Bertha Fildes. James (who died 1892) was also a trustee of the Newton Heath Permanent Benefit Building Society and the Third Newton Heath Permanent Benefit Building Society and Treasurer of the Loyal King George the Fourth lodge No. 73 of the Independent Order of Oddfellows Joseph Fildes was trustee of Newton Heath Ragged School and of All Saints School, Newton Heath, thus acquiring many papers relating to the school He was also treasurer of the All Saints' Sunday School while Miss Bertha Fildes was a Sunday School teacher Joseph's other interests as Divisional Organiser for the Clayton Division of the Manchester and Salford Medical Charities Fund and Hon. Treasurer of the Clayton Division Conservative and Unionist Association are also reflected in the papers His brother James's name appears on most of the correspondence relating to corn shortages during the Second World War

The papers were removed from 85 Droylsden Rd., Newton Heath, in Sept. 1973, on the death of Miss Bertha Fildes, with the permission of her nephew, Mr. George Fildes of the White Swan Hotel, 186 Worsley Rd., Swinton.
