The City Engineers Plan File (M723/84) is a large collection of microfiche cards of plans of streets, sewers, areas and planning documents.
Related Material:See M582 for staff records, 1913-1946.
This department also created several thousand plans of sewer works dating from 1830 onwards. These were catalogued and microfiched by the Department in 1988. For further details see the article 'Mapping Manchester's Sewers: The Engineering Archives Project' in the Manchester Regional History Review, Volume 2 Number 2, Autumn/Winter 1988/89' (http://web.archive.org/web/20070221174041/http://www.mcrh.mmu.ac.uk/pubs/pdf/mrhr_02ii_john_guest.pdf). These microfiche and catalogue are now held by United Utilities. A sample of the original plans for Central District has been catalogued at GB127.M845.
