The parish was formed by Order in Coucil 29 Nov 1859 (London Gazette, 2 Dec 1859) from All Saints, Chorlton upon Medlock, Holy Trinity, Hulme and Christ Church, Moss Side.
In 1959 along with All Saints, Chorlton upon Medlock and Holy Trinity, Hulme, the parish of St John the Baptist was united with St. Philip's, Hulme, by Order of Council, 21 Dec (London Gazette, 5 Jan 1960), these benefices have been held in plurality, by the incumbent of St Philip's since Oct 1950.
