Custodial history:
Heywood chapel was an ancient chapelry in the parish of Bury, shown on Saxton's map of 1577, which served the township of Heap. The old church was enlarged about 1805, but by the middle of the century was in disrepair, finally being pulled down in 1860.A Committee to build a new church was formed in 1858, and the foundation stone laid on 31 May 1860.The new church was consecrated on 18 October 1862. By Order in Council, 7 January 1864, (London Gazette 8 January 1864), a District was assigned, comprising all that part of the township of Heap not already assigned to St. James, Heywood, (Bishop's Instrument, 16 July 1840), St. Mary, Birch (London Gazette, 11 August 1842) or St. John, Bircle, (London Gazette, 28 April 1848).Part of the parish was transferred to St. Michael's Bamford, by Order in Council, 2 March 1881, (London Gazette, 8 March 1881), and to St. John the Evangelist, Hopwood, by Order in Council, 10 May 1905, (London Gazette, 12 May 1905).Both St. Michael's and St. John's started as Mission or school churches of St. Luke's. All Souls, Castleton, or Heywood, was also a Mission, but it was eventually assigned a District from St. Martin's, Castleton (see Parish Magazines).
