Custodial history:
By Order in Council, 30 June 1845 (London Gazette 1 July 1945) The hamlet of Tonge, and part of the townships of Breightmet and Harwood, in the parish of Bolton, were made into the District of Tonge. It was not until 1855 however that St. James's Church, Tonge cum Breightmet, was built on land given by the devises of the late William Hampson. It was consecrated on 1 November 1855. Though it had long been known as St. James's Breightmet, it only officially changed its name from Tonge by Bishop's Order, 14 May 1974 (London Gazette, 28 May 1974). In 1979 a daughter church, St. John, Top of the Moss, was founded (London Gazette, 9 February 1979).
