St. Mary's, Oldham, began as a chapel in the parish of Prestwich cum Oldham. The chapel was rebuilt in the mid 15th century and again 1827-1830.
The parochial chapel of Oldham (St. Mary's), and the chapels of St. Peter, Oldham , St. James, Oldham, St. Margaret, Hollinwood, St. Paul, Royton and Holy Trinity, Shaw, were assigned their own Districts, from the parish of Prestwich cum Oldham, by Order in Council, 4 March 1835 (London Gazette , 5 May 1835).
In 1844, by Order in Council 7 October, (London Gazette, 22 October) St. Mary's parish was reduced in size by the creation of the Districts of St. Matthew, Chadderton, St. John, Chadderton (later known as St. John, Wemeth), Holy Trinity, Coldhurst, and [St. Thomas] Werneth.
December 1873, (London Gazette, 16 December 1873), and part of St. Mary's was assigned to All Saints, Northmoor, by Order in Council, 9 May 1892, (London Gazette, 13 May 1892).
St. Andrew's parish, Oldham, was created from St. Mary's, by Order in Council, 12 December 1973 (London Gazette 16 December 1873) and part of St. Mary's was assigned to All Saints, Northmoor by Order in Council, 9 May 1892 (London Gazette 13 May 1892)
In 1964 the parishes of St. Mary and St. Peter were united, by Order in Council, 15 October, (London Gazette, 16 October 1964), St. Mary's becoming the parish church of the united benefice of St. Mary with St. Peter.
In 1978, by Order in Council, 9 February, (London Gazette, 14 February 1978) the parishes of St. Mary with St. Peter, Holy Trinity, Coldhurst, and St. Andrew, Oldham, joined together as the parish of Oldham.
By Order in Council, 19 October 1983, (London Gazette, 27 October 1983) the parish of St. John, Werneth, was added to the parish of Oldham.
