Custodial history:
St. John's was founded by Rev. John Clowes, who gave the site for the church. It was opened for divine service on 7 January 1837 and consecrated on 5 October 1839. A District was assigned to it by Order in Council, 8 June 1854 (London Gazette, 16 June 1854). In 2007 the Diocese proposed to dissolve the parish and divide it between the parish of St Clement with St Mathias (Lower Broughton) and St James (Higher Broughton) on the grounds of a dwindling congregation and the expense of maintaining a large Grade 2 listed historic building.
