Background Information Mr. Sowersby's father was a farmer from Langtoft, Yorkshire. He moved to York getting a job as a grocery salesman. Here he met his wife who was from Epworth, Lincolnshire. In the course of his work he came to Urmston, saw and bought a shop that was for sale at 10, Crofts Bank Road, opening it as a confectioners and wine shop, in 1896. Mr Sowersby was born above the shop on 7th June 1899. He took over the business in 1946 on the death of his father.
