Custodial history:
The Grosvenor Street Circuit started out as the Manchester South Wesleyan Methodist Circuit, which was formed in 1824 out of Manchester Wesleyan Methodist Circuit. In 1827 it became known as Manchester 3rd Wesleyan Methodist Circuit, then later, in the mid-nineteenth century, it became Manchester (Grosvenor Street) Wesleyan Methodist Circuit - in fact Grosvenor Street Chapel had always been its head chapel. Initially Grosvenor Street was a large circuit, consisting of many chapels, but during the course of the nineteenth century chapels broke away to form new circuits. At its core the circuit had Grosvenor Street Chapel and Chancery Lane school-chapel in Ardwick and also Great Ancoats Street chapel and New Islington chapel until the late nineteenth century. Later additions were Plymouth Grove in Chorlton-upon-Medlock, Beswick (Charlesworth St., formerly Church St.), Bradford (Ashton New Rd.)and Rylance St. School and Mission in Ardwick Until the formation in 1846 of Manchester 5th (Oxford Rd.) Circuit, Grosvenor Street Circuit included Oxford Road, Hulme (George Street), Chorlton-cum-Hardy (Beech Road), Withington, Northernden and Rusholme. Until the formation in 1879 of Longsight Circuit, it included Longsight (Stockport Rd.); Gorton (Cross Lane); Hyde Rd., West Gorton; Openshaw (Grey Mare Lane), Higher Openshaw and Droylsden. In 1945, Grosvenor Street Circuit became part of Manchester South East Circuit reuniting it with some of its pre-1879 chapels.
