St. Agnes began as a Mission of the parish of St. Elisabeth in 1881. A District was assigned by Order in Council, 11 June 1902, (London Gazette, 13 June 1902) from the parishes of St. Elisabeth, Reddish, St. James, Gorton, Christ Church, Denton and St. George, Abbey Hey, Gorton. The church was consecrated on 3 December 1908 Part of the parish was assigned to St. Philip's, Gorton, by Order in Council, 10 August 1926 (London Gazette, 13 August 1926). The boundaries with St. George, Abbey Hey, were altered by Bishop's Order, 12 July 1976 (London Gazette, 20 July 1976.
