This archive consists largely of the predecessor bodies which carried out statutory water supply functions. They are grouped into three organizations: 1. Bolton Corporation Waterworks, including Bolton and District Joint Sewerage Board 2. Manchester Corporation Waterworks, which consists solely of the Bury and District Joint Water Board 3. West Pennine Water Board, which comprises the records of Ashton under Lyne, Stalybridge and Dukinfield (District) Waterworks, Bacup Corporation, Heywood and Middleton Water Board, the Irwell Valley Water Board, Oldham Corporation Waterworks and Rochdale Corporation Waterworks. The North West Water Authority took over the functions of these bodies when it was created by the Water Act of 1973.
