EDNA WAINE'S grandfather, Samuel Lea, was born at Haslington, near Crewe, in 1864 and died in Cheadle Hulme in 1948. After leaving school at 12 he worked in the day as an apprentice millwright at Crewe Works and studied at night at the Crewe Mechanics' Institute. In 1892, after a number of years of teaching at the Mechanics' Institute at Crewe and Northwich, he became a Weights and Measures Inspector for North Cheshire.
The donor's father, Adrian Waine, was a joiner, one of a family of 4 sons and one daughter. His own father, Joseph, was also a joiner, as well as a volunteer fireman, scout worker and a trainer in the volunteer army.
