The donor was born in Manchester in 1900, her father Canton (Rev.) Harris Newman had been appointed Cantor of the Great Synagogue in 1895, a post he held till 1941. Harris Newman came to England from Poland where he was born in Lodz in 1863. The donor is his daughter from his second marriage in the late 1890s, by a previous marriage he had a son Sam and another daughter. The donor's mother Augusta (nee Lasgelt or Lasergelt) was the daughter of a Rabbi, she was born in Austria but educated in England.
The donor was educated at the Brussels Conservatoire. The donor sang at the Knocke Casino in Belgium in 1926 and she appeared in cabaret in Knocke in the 1930s. She was offered a job with Belgium radio but returned to England to look after her father. The donor married Nathan Goldman in 1939, he lived in Oxford Road, Manchester. The marriage was not a successful one. The donor's brother, Philip was born in 1904. Also the donor had a brother called Monty. Philip Newman was taught by Adolf Brotsky at the Accademy of Music and in 1924 enrolled in the Brussels Conservatoire. He went to Berlin and Vienna to further his career in music. In 1937 he was introduced to Queen Elisabeth of Belgium and became of one the Queen's favourite musicians, becoming the court violinist. Escaping from the German invasion in World War II, Philip Newman went to Portugal and in 1942 was appointed Professor at the Academy of Music, Lisbon. He was made a Commander of the Order of Santiago de Espado. After the war he gave concerts to raise money for the Red Cross and in the 1950s toured the Belgian Congo, Angola and South Africa, giving free concerts to the natives. In the early 1960s he founded the Pollensa Musical Festival (Majorca). He died of a heart attack on 23rd November 1966.
The Newman family lived in Elizabeth Street, Cheetham Hill, pre. 1912, when they moved to Petworth Street. The donor's mother died c.1942, her father in 1953. The donor had an uncle Barnett Hollander, who was a lawyer in New York with office at 44, Wall Street, and with an office in the Temple, London. He died c.11 years ago aged 95.
