Custodial history:
This deposit relates to the Hayward family, particularly Dorothy Hayward (1 Feb 1893 - 25 Nov 1975) and her sister Evelyn (16 Feb 1897 - Oct 1975). They were two of seven children to reach adulthood whose parents were Benjamin and Kate Hayward. Kate was a teacher from Ely in Cambridgeshire who found a teaching post in Gosport. Benjamin kept a baker and confectioners shop at 107, Forton Road, Gosport. Dorothy, Eve and another sister Kate Mabel (the donor's grandmother, d. Feb 1927) all became teachers. Mabel (b. 1882) qualified at Whitelands College, Roehampton in Surrey; Dorothy and Eve went to Bishop Otter College near Chichester. Dorothy and Eve never married and lived at home with another unmarried sister Marjorie (Madge b. 1895), remaining in the family home after the death of their parents. They were involved in different local churches, and taught at different schools. Dorothy was very much head of the household and became headmistress of her primary school. She was a very keen amateur photographer and took care to arrange and caption her photographs in albums. Some of the photographs were taken by Evelyn of the same holiday, but in the main they travelled separately. Dorothy may be accompanied by friends from Bishop Otter, certainly by other teachers. The holidays were often teacher exchange trips which were quite common in the 1930s. On one of these trips to Canada, Madge who had accompanied them, was hurt in a motor car accident and subsequently stayed at home to run their domestic life. Madge died in 1966. Another sister, Elsie (1890-1930) was not one to stay at home. She volunteered to work in France during World War I. She also features in some of the photographs. She died of thrombosis aged 39. At some point Dorothy ceased to take black and white prints preferring instead slide tranparencies. These have not been kept except for those featuring members of the family in the 1950s and 1960s. The majority of these slides pictured cathedrals. Other material relating to Dorothy Hayward at Bishop Otter College has been deposited in West Sussex Record Office; photographs of parish activities at St John's and Christchurch, Gosport in Portsmouth Record Office (1595a); and four albums of photographs and postcards of their Canadian/Alaskan trip in 1935-6 and letter re insurance claim in the State Archives of Canada.
