Javier de Frutos studied at the London School of Contemporary Dance and then at the Merce Cunningham School in New York. In 1994 he was invited to become European Choreographer in Residence at Chisenhale Dance Space in London. In 1995 Javier de Frutos was the recipient of the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Choreographers and in 1996 was the winner of the Prix d'auteur of Bagnolet 1996. He presented his dance show 'Grass' at the Dancehouse Theatre on Friday 1-Saturday 2 May as part of queerupnorth's 1998 season. It was part of the 'Open Your Mind' initiative.
