Custodial history:
The origins of this circuit lie in Manchester Wesleyan Methodist Circuit which was established in the second half of the eighteenth century. In 1786 the Stockport Circuit was formed out of the Manchester Circuit; in 1791 the Oldham Circuit was formed and in 1813 the Salford Circuit was formed. In 1824 the Manchester Circuit was itself split into 'North' and 'South'. The Manchester (North) Wesleyan Methodist Circuit was headed by Oldham Street Chapel and from 1827 was known as Manchester 1st Wesleyan Methodist (Oldham Street) Circuit. In 1863 the Cheetham Hill and Crumpsall churches left to form Manchester 7th Wesleyan Methodist (Cheetham Hill) Circuit and in 1878 other churches left to form Manchester (Victoria) Wesleyan Methodist Circuit. In 1883 Oldham Street Chapel was transferred to the Manchester and Salford Wesleyan Methodist Mission (and rebuilt as Central Hall) and the circuit was re-named Manchester (Oldham Road) Wesleyan Methodist Circuit, headed by Wesley Chapel in Oldham Road. In 1958 the circuit was joined by Manchester (Culcheth) Methodist Circuit and re-named Manchester (Newton Heath) Methodist Circuit. In 1966 Newton Heath Circuit joined with Harpurhey Methodist Circuit and became known as Manchester (North East) Methodist Circuit (not to be confused with the old Manchester North East United Methodist Circuit). The Failsworth ex-Wesleyan Methodist Chapel and the New Moston ex-Primitive Methodist Chapel were added to the new circuit. Although situated in the north east area of Manchester, these two churches had always previously belonged to Oldham circuits. The new circuit comprised the following churches: Culcheth MNC, Failsworth (Bethel) MNC, Failsworth (Holy Family), Failsworth Wesleyan Methodist, Harpurhey Wesleyan Methodist, Moston (St Mary's Road) MNC, Moston Methodist (ex-Streetfold UMFC), New Moston PM, Newton Heath (Oldham Road)Wesleyan Methodist, White Moss Methodist, Woodhouses Wesleyan Methodist The North East Circuit lasted only four years after which time it was joined by the Middleton Circuit and re-named Manchester (North) and Middleton Methodist Circuit [for records of this circuit and associated churches see M80]. ASSOCIATED FORMER CIRCUITS Manchester 1st Wesleyan Methodist (Oldham Street) Circuit This circuit was the continuation of Manchester (North) Wesleyan Circuit, formed in 1824 out of Manchester Wesleyan Circuit and re-named in 1827. In 1863 the Cheetham Hill and Crumpsall churches left to form Manchester 7th Wesleyan Methodist (Cheetham Hill) Circuit and in 1878 more churches left to form Manchester (Victoria) Wesleyan Methodist Circuit. The circuit comprised the following churches: Manchester (Oldham Street), Manchester (Wesley, Oldham Road), Cheetham (Ebenezer, Red Bank), Cheetham (Victoria), Cheetham Hill Wesleyan Methodist, Collyhurst Wesleyan Methodist, Crumpsall Wesleyan Methodist, Harpurhey Wesleyan Methodist, Miles Platting Wesleyan Methodist, Newton Heath Wesleyan Methodist Manchester (Oldham Road) Wesleyan Methodist Circuit The circuit was the continuation of Manchester (Oldham Street) Wesleyan Circuit after the departure in 1883 of Oldham Street Chapel. Headed by Wesley Chapel in Oldham Road, the circuit continued after the Methodist Union of 1932 until 1958 when it was joined by Manchester (Culcheth) Methodist Circuit to form Manchester (Newton Heath) Methodist Circuit. The circuit comprised the following churches: Manchester (Wesley, Oldham Road), Miles Platting Wesleyan Methodist, Monsall Wesleyan Methodist, Newton Heath Wesleyan Methodist, Woodhouses Wesleyan Methodist Manchester (North) United Methodist Circuit The circuit began as Manchester (North) Methodist New Connexion Circuit, formed in around 1870. After the Methodist Union of 1907, it became Manchester (North) United Methodist Circuit.
