Before 1839 Bradford township was served by the chapelry of All Saints, Newton. In 1839 it was transferred to the parish of St. Barnabas, Openshaw. The foundation stone of Christ Church was laid on 1 June 1861, and the church consecrated on 19 April 1862. A District was assigned to it from St. Barnabas, Openshaw, by Order in Council, 30 August 1862, (London 5 September 1862). In 1879 St. Mary's, Beswick, was formed from Christ Church, by Order in Council, 4 February, (London Gazette 7 February 1879). In 1898 St. Aidan's, Bradford, was assigned a District out of Christ Church, by Order in Council, 19 May, (London Gazette. 20 May 1989). St. Aidan's was consecrated on Easter Day 1899. The two parishes of Christ Church and St. Aidan were re-united in 1972, as the parish of the Resurrection, by Order in Council, 24 May, (London 30 May 1972). By Order in Council, 24 November 1982, (London Gazette. 30 November) the parish of the Resurrection was united with the parishes of All Souls, Ancoats, and St. Jerome with St. Silas, Ardwick, as the parish of the Good Shepherd, Manchester.

The records were deposited in the Library, as Diocesan Record Office, in May and June 1974 by Canon P Hoare, in 1981 by Rev D A Edwards, and in 1982 by Rev G Wright. An additional deposit, mostly of papers from St. Aidan's, was made in October 1997, by Mr A Dewhurst (Accession 1997/59).They had formerly been in the care of Joseph Black, first Records of the Churchwarden of St. Aidan's.
