Custodial history:
The Victoria Brewery, Hyde Street, Ardwick, Manchester, Greater Manchester was established prior to 1830. In 1842 Samuel Collins, brewer of Chorlton-on-Medlock, Greater Manchester, and Thomas Chesters, shopkeeper of Ancoats, Greater Manchester, rented the brewery, trading as Collins and Chesters. They also leased the Mayfair Brewery, Tipping and Stove Street, Ardwick, until 1892. They built a new brewery, Ardwick Brewery, in Princess Street, Ardwick, which opened in 1852 and gave up the Victoria Brewery. Samuel Collins died around 1853 and Thomas Chesters carried on as sole proprietor until his death in 1872. His executors, led by Stephen Chesters Thompson, his nephew, ran the business until April 1888 when Chesters Brewery Co Ltd was registered as a limited liability company to acquire the business and 81 licensed houses at a purchase price of £373,200. The company acquired John Battersby & Co, Wellington Brewery, Wellington Street, Openshaw, Manchester (closed 1895), in 1888; John Foster, Swan Brewery, Grey Street, Ardwick (leased 1898), and Richardson & Goodall, Market Place, Altrincham, Cheshire, in 1890; Salford Brewery Co Ltd, Town Hall Brewery, Ford Street, Salford, Greater Manchester, in 1896; and W M Cross, Lord Street, Preston, Lancashire, in 1944. It merged in 1961 with Threlfall's Brewery Co Ltd, Liverpool, Merseyside, and Salford, to form Threlfalls Chesters Ltd. The Ardwick Brewery ceased to brew in 1966.
