The origins of this circuit lie in Manchester (Radnor Street) Wesleyan Circuit formed in 1867 out of Manchester (Oxford Road) Wesleyan Circuit. Churches belonging to the circuit were: Chorlton-cum-Hardy Beech Road Wesleyan and Manchester Road Wesleyan, Hulme Cedar Street Wesleyan Mission, George Street Wesleyan and Radnor Street Wesleyan, Manley Park Wesleyan and Whalley Range Wesleyan. Radnor Street Circuit continued until 1934 when it was joined by churches from Manchester (Upper Moss Lane) ex-Primitive Methodist Circuit (Davyhulme ex-PM and Hulme Upper Moss Lane ex-PM) and Manchester (Oxford Road) ex-UM Circuit (Glazebrook Temple ex-UMFC and Hulme Boston Street ex-MNC) and re-named Manchester (Hulme and Whalley Range) Methodist Circuit. In 1948 the circuit was joined by churches from Manchester (Great Western Street) ex-Primitive Methodist Circuit (Chorlton-cum-Hardy High Lane ex-PM and Moss Side Great Western Street ex-PM) and re-named Manchester (Chorlton and Moss Side) Methodist Circuit. It was dissolved in September 1970 and its remaining churches were divided between Manchester (Withington) Methodist Circuit and the Manchester and Salford Methodist Mission.

This collection is an amalgamation of several deposits. Records were deposited in 1974, 1978, 1981-1982 and also in 2000 (accession numbers 2000/14 and 2000/60) by E.A. Rose, Honorary Methodist District Archivist, in 1974 and 1988 by the Principal of Hartley Victoria Methodist College, in 1997 by Rev. Colin Cooper, Superintendent Minister, Withington Methodist Circuit (accession number 1997/50) and in 1998 by P.E. Lloyd of Chorlton-cum-Hardy Methodist Church (accession number 1998/1a). A number of the marriage registers were transferred from the Methodist Archives and Research Centre, London, in 1977, and although included in the list, are numbered at M275/. More specific details of deposit are given in the lists for each individual church, as are historical details

The first register of the Upper Moss Lane Chapel is not available due to damage incurred from fire.
